How to Replace an audi replacement key service G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and Audi a3 Key Fob injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get zero ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly in the case of a Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a great option.

5. Tachometer
